Veterans Day
Wednesday was officially Veterans Day. We held a special moment of silence on Wednesday to honor their sacrifices. Thank you to all of our veterans and current service men and women!
EXPLORE Testing – Grade 9
On Monday afternoon and Tuesday morning, our ninth graders took EXPLORE tests. The EXPLORE program is designed to help the students investigate a broad range of options for their future. The test subjects included English, reading, math, and science. There was also an interest inventory. The results the students receive will help guide their choices for their high school coursework and post-high school planning. You can view more information about the test at http://www.actstudent.org/explore/
Fall Sports Wrap Up
This week concluded the fall sports season. I want to send out a great big thank you to the athletes, coaches, and parents for their dedication and determination. I was at several games and matches throughout the season. I was very impressed by our effort and conduct throughout the year. Congratulations to everyone on a super fall sports season!
Winter Sports Physicals/Information
If a student had a physical done at school during the summer or by his/her family doctor that is dated after June 1, 2009, he/she is cleared to participate in a winter sport. If he/she did not get a physical, it will be the parents/guardians responsibility to schedule a physical with their family doctor. Remember, if you got the comprehensive physical done at school or by your family doctor for a fall sport, you do not need to get another physical. You will only need a parent/guardian to fill out the Re-Certification form. All forms are the school district’s website located under Our Schools and then Athletics. Athletes cannot participate until all forms are received.
Upcoming Events
Home Access Center – Tips for Use
Thanks everyone for your patience as we converted to a new student information system and parent access center. See the attachment for some useful tips on where to locate information in the home access center.
From the School Counselors…
As part of our school’s continuing commitment to assist your child(ren) in developing both academically and individually, we are pleased to offer Kids of Promise, an in-school support group. This curriculum-based support group is offered through Caron’s Student Assistance Program. It is voluntary for students and parental permission is required to participate. The group’s focus will be: positive self-esteem building, healthy communication skills, relationship building (parents, siblings, peers, etc.), healthy coping skills and decision making, alcohol and drug prevention, and helping students identify feelings associated with loved ones who may be suffering from addiction. Confidentiality is maintained throughout the group process. For more information, please contact Mrs. Siwik at msiwik@boyertownasd.org
America Recycles Day (November 15)
Sunday, November 15th is America Recycles Day. To participate, bring your paper items to our green and yellow recycling bins for drop-off. Not only is it good for the environment, it is a fundraiser for us as well. The more paper we collect each month, the more money we receive from Abitibi for our schools.
Library Food Drive for Salvation Army (November 2-23)
It’s time for the annual library food drive! The library will be collecting non-perishable food (canned or boxed) from November 2 to November 23. Everyone is invited to participate. If you have any library fines, this is a great opportunity for you! Non-perishable food items will be accepted as payment for your fines. The food will be donated to the Salvation Army for their annual Thanksgiving Day dinner and Christmas food baskets. All non-perishable food donations will be accepted, but the following items will be particularly appreciated: canned corn, canned green beans, canned gravy, applesauce, canned fruit, canned cranberry, tea, and coffee. Please consider donating to this worthy cause.
Leo Club SPCA Towel Drive (November 9-19)
The Leo Club is sponsoring a towel drive for the SPCA. Please donate your unwanted clean towels. The club will be collecting the towels in homeroom. The homeroom with the highest number of towels donated will receive a prize. Thanks in advance for helping animals sheltered by the SPCA.
Yearbook Sale (November 9 to 20)
School yearbook orders will be taken from November 9th to 20th. The cost of a yearbook is $20.00. This will be the only time orders will be taken. We do not purchase extras for sale later in the year.
Ninth Grade Trip Registration (November 20-23)
Our ninth graders make their annual trek to Broadway, NYC on Wednesday, April 21. The students will enjoy dinner and one of the following Broadway shows: West Side Story, Lion King, Phantom of The Opera, and Spiderman. The trip is an excellent cultural experience and provides reinforcement for the drama unit the students study in class. On November 20th and 23rd, we will have the students sign up for shows with their bus seat partner. All students going on the trip were given a random number. The lowest number between the partners will determine their selection order. We are using the random numbers to be as fair as possible to all students involved. The balance of the payment and completed permission slips are due for the students to register. We realize this is a costly trip. We have financial assistance available. If you missed the deadline or need assistance, please contact Mr. Didyoung as soon as possible at (610) 473-3920 or sdidyoung@boyertownasd.org.
Ninth Grade Trip Chaperones
Any parent/guardian interested in serving as a chaperone for the New York City trip, please indicate your interest on the registration form given in the Broadway packet. Chaperones will be required to have all district clearances which can be found on the forms page on the East district website. Parents who had clearances on file for the eighth grade trip last year, do not need to obtain new clearances. Cost for the chaperones is the same as the students - $180.00. Chaperone paperwork will be distributed after the Winter Break holiday.

The winter sports coaches held informational meetings for all prospective team members. At the meetings, coaches gave out the letter for the parents/guardians about when winter sports start, where to download the physical forms and what forms need to be returned to school. Labels, etc. Wanted
Again this year we are collecting Redner's Tapes, Box Tops for Education, Turkey Hill Moo Money, and Campbell's labels. (FYI: Campbell’s is no longer collecting the front label. They are now only collecting the UPC, so please make sure to include it so we get credit.) We appreciate your support as we have recently used the credit earned to supplement our technology needs. We provide a breakfast treat for the 7th, 8th, and 9th grade homeroom that turns in the most labels each quarter.
Magazine Subscription Drive
The magazine subscription drive to raise funds for school technology has concluded. However, please consider renewing your subscriptions throughout the year online. 7th Grade Dental Examinations
In Pennsylvania all students are required to have a dental exam in grades kindergarten or first, third, and seventh. The dental exam can be completed privately or by the school. A private examination completed after September 1, 2008 will be accepted. Please return your child’s dental form to the nurse’s office by September 30, 2009. The dental forms are available at http://www.boyertownasd.org ; go to our schools-Junior High East and click on Nurse. If your child is unable to have a private exam; a school dental exam will be offered on 2/16/2010. Please contact the nurse’s office with any questions at 610-473-3970 or email Mrs. Moser at cmoser@boyertownasd.org.
Call for Parent Volunteers
We could use your help during the 2009-2010 school year. We will need dance chaperones for each of our school dances. If you are interested in working as a chaperone or would like more information, please e-mail one of our Student Council advisors, Miss Young at jyoung@boyertownasd.org or Miss Garvey at mgarvey@boyertownasd.org.
If you are interested in helping out in the main office, please e-mail Mrs. Miller at jmiller1@boyertownasd.org.
Thanks in advance for your help!
Career Presenters Needed
Career presentations are a great way for students to learn about different careers and how their junior high education relates to their future career aspirations. Energetic volunteers from various career areas are needed to present an overview of their career to the students during their classes.
If you are interested in donating your time to participate in this valuable educational opportunity, please contact Ms. Sandy Gallagher, school counselor, at sgallagher@boyertownasd.org.
Reminder: Change in Traffic Pattern at East
Due to safety concerns, we have made access to the rear of the building from the east entrance only. As you are traveling east on Route 73, use the second entrance. Proceed around the building to access the rear (gym) parking lot. Once drop-off or pick-up has been made, continue around the building past the tennis court lot to exit. Follow the signs posted. Thank you for your cooperation.
My Coke Rewards
Do you or your family members drink Coke products? If you do, you can help East earn points that can turn into school supplies for our students. Many Coke products have a code inside the bottle cap or inside the cardboard box carrier. By simply logging onto http://www.mycokerewards.com/ and typing in the code, you can donate those points to East as a part of their My Coke Rewards program. (You’ll see a place on the website that directs you to donating to a school.) We can save hundreds of dollars by converting those points into materials such as construction paper and other classroom supplies. It’s an easy way to help support our students and the work they do here at East.
Homework Help
We are pleased to announce that we now have our after school homework help program back in place. Students who are struggling to finish their homework may be assigned to homework help. The program starts immediately after school and runs until 4:00. Homework help will be available Tuesdays and Thursdays each week.
Math Hotline Open for Business
The math hotline opened on Monday, September 28th. Students can call one of the numbers below or stop in to Junior High West in Room 19 Monday-Thursday anytime between 7:00 - 8:30 PM. The hotline has two high school students and a math teacher available to help. Visitors should enter Junior High West through the side door. This is a great opportunity for all the students to get help. (610) 473-3720, (610) 473-3721
Homework Request Procedure
I just wanted to remind everyone that we have a procedure in place to gather homework for absent students. We will gather homework for students after two days of absence. To make it as easy as possible for you, we simply ask that you request homework when calling your child out sick. Mrs. Bullick notifies the teachers and office of the request so we can serve you efficiently when you arrive to pick up the work.
Have a great weekend!
Great season, Phillies!
Go Eagles!

East Procedures
Student AM Drop-Off Procedure
Just a reminder that students should be dropped off between 7:20 and 7:30 AM. Please use the east entrance into the loop in front of the building. As you enter the loop, stay to your right and circle around to the front of the building. Pull up to the curb to drop your child off. After drop off, use caution when pulling away from the curb. Continue ahead to the stop sign and make a left to get back to Route 73. The procedure worked smoothly last year. However, if you are on a tight time schedule, you are probably better off having your student ride the bus.
Student PM Pick-Up Procedure
Students getting picked up from school are dismissed at 2:43 PM. When picking up your son or daughter, please exercise caution and courtesy. Use the east entrance into the loop in front of the building. As you enter the loop, stay to your right and circle around to the front of the building. If you arrive before students are dismissed, please pull into a parking space to wait for your child. Last year we were getting a “traffic jam” in front of the building as parents were waiting along the curb, preventing other vehicles from getting through. Thanks in advance for your cooperation.
Parking/Entry During the School Day
Due to the security system we have in place, the only doors available for public access are the front doors. Please use the spaces in front of the building when parking during the school day. When picking up or parking during extracurricular activities, you may park in the back lot as long as you will not be there during bus arrival and dismissal times (7-8 AM; 2:15-3:15 PM). You may always park at any time in the west parking lot next to the tennis courts.
