Update to our No Shave New Year Contest… Ladies with Mustaches! Will Mr. Letts get his head shaved? Six men are left in our no shave contest. As a reward for raising $100 in one week, 22 female faculty members wore mustaches today. Mr. Letts has challenged the students to raise $100 more dollars by next Friday. One lucky student will shave Mr. Letts’s head in front of the student body. Our contest continues until the last man shaves. Votes cost .25 or 5 for a $1 and all proceeds benefit The Boyertown Relay Life. Please encourage your child to take a guess at who will shave next or who will shave last.
4Sight Testing This morning, we administered 4Sight reading tests to all students. The test mirrors the types of questions given to students in the PSSA exams. The tests are helpful because they give us an indicator of student performance before the state exams. We use the information to guide some of our instructional decisions and to identify individuals who may need some extra support. We administer the test four times throughout the year. We share the information with the students so they can track their progress as well. If you have any questions, please give me a call.
Grade 9 to 10 Course Registration Overdue If your child did not turn in a course request sheet, please have him/her do so now. If you have any questions about courses or the process, please give us a call.
Grade 8 to 9 Scheduling Mrs. Hawkins and Mrs. Siwik visited math classes last week to answer questions and help students enter their course requests for ninth grade. The link to the Program of Studies is on our JHE web site. If your child did not turn in a course request sheet, please have him/her do so as soon as possible. If you have any questions about courses or the process, please give us a call.
Grade 7 Scheduling The process for Grade 7 to 8 scheduling begins in early March.

TSA Competition Congratulations Last weekend, seventeen JHE students participated in the Technology Student Association Regional Competition held in Quakertown, PA. TSA is a national organization where secondary students compete in a variety of technical events. These events range from Structural Engineering to Prepared Speech. Our students competed very well. We earned several first, second, and third place ribbons, with numerous students placing in the top ten in their respective events. All students qualified to advance to the state competition in April. We are extremely proud of the students. Thanks to Mr. Brass, Mr. Kennedy, and Mr. Schopf for sponsoring the students. Good luck at states!

Berks Career & Technology Center: Technical Academy Information Night (February 23) Ninth grade students accepted to the Berks Career & Technology Center (BCTC) for next year were mailed an invitation to an information night about their Technical Academy. The Technical Academy offers a Business & Information Technology Cluster and an Engineering Technology Cluster. The academy is done in association with Reading Area Community College and students have the opportunity to earn up to 27 college credits while still in high school. The presentation starts at 6:30 PM at the Schmidt Training and Technology Center located on the RACC campus. Please note that this is simply an opportunity to learn more about the program. Students are NOT obligated to attend and this does NOT affect next year’s placement at BCTC. Please contact Mrs. Stacey Campbell, BCTC counselor, at (610) 374-4073 with any questions.
Planetarium Public Shows: Adventures in Orion (February 27) On February 27th at 7:00 PM, the Boyertown Planetarium will showcase the constellation Orion the Hunter in our new star program, “Adventures in Orion”. This star patterns shows numerous examples of stellar evolution from the birth of stars to one that is so unstable it most likely is already dead! Explore Orion through mythology and science as we take an in- depth look at one of the most popular constellations of the night sky. After this program you’ll never look at Orion in quite the same way again.
Admission to the planetarium is $4 for adults and $2.50 for students and children. The planetarium is located in the back of the building at the Junior High East Center on Route 73. For more information call director Peter Detterline at 610-473-3906.

Boyertown Junior High East presents “Once Upon a Mattress” (March 1-3, 2012) If you thought you knew the story of “The Princess and The Pea,” you may be in for a walloping surprise! Did you know, for instance, that Princess Winnifred actually swam the moat to reach Prince Dauntless the Drab? Or that, in fact, it wasn’t the pea at all that caused the princess a sleepless night? Carried on a wave of wonderful songs, by turns hilarious and raucous, romantic and melodic, this rollicking spin on the familiar classic provides for some side-splitting shenanigans. Chances are you’ll never look at fairy tales quite the same way again.

Can Tab Project Update We are almost at 4 million can tabs but we need your help. Please continue to save can tabs and send them to school with your child. The district has set a goal of collecting 6 million can tabs to demonstrate the number of Jewish people killed during the Holocaust. The can tabs will eventually be recycled and the proceeds donated to the Ronald McDonald House.
District Total 3,908,118 (65.1% of the goal) as of October 9, 2011.
How much is 6 Million? The Sovereign Center in Reading has a seating capacity of 7,215 people. You would have to fill the center over 831 times to have the same number of people as the number of Jews killed during the Holocaust. You would have to fill the park 1524 times to have the same number of people as were killed in the Holocaust.
Facts about the Holocaust It is estimated that 11 million people were killed during the Holocaust. Six million of these were Jews. The Nazis killed approximately two-thirds of all Jews living in Europe. An estimated 1.1 million children were murdered in the Holocaust. Source: Jennifer Rosenberg, About.com Guide
