No Place for Hate Day – May 8, 2012

On Tuesday May 8th, the entire Boyertown Area Community will celebrate “No Place for Hate Day”. This day was established for the entire community (schools, businesses, churches, etc.) to show support for continuing efforts in Boyertown to celebrate both our unity and diversity. Many businesses give their employees the opportunity to sign the Resolution of Respect, wear t-shirts promoting the day, and be involved in various other functions. Students in schools and at the Boyertown YMCA will have special programs surrounding this theme and also the opportunity to purchase t-shirts, mural prints, and other items to support the cause.

A Christmas Carol

On Dec. 23rd, the 7th grade students participated in activities around the movie A Christmas Carol. The students began the day with the discussion question, "What moment in Scrooge’s life had the most impact on Scrooge becoming a nasty miser and why?" While watching the movie they complete a worksheet with important information about the story. After the movie, the students were to pick 10 events from the play/movie that explain WHY or HOW Scrooge is a mean miser and jot them down in the boxes on the accompanying worksheet. They then cut out the boxes and arranged them on a timeline of Scrooge’s life. The students created many colorful and very thoughtful timeslines oin display in our hallways.

The Blind Side

On Dec. 23rd, the 8th & 9th grade students participated in activities around the movie The Blind Side. The students began the day participating in a Diversity Scavenger Hunt. The students had a worksheet with 16 different questions on it. The students were to put their name to any questions that applied to them. They then traded papers with another person and did the same thing. Students continued trading papers eventually understanding that we are all different. After watching the movie the students created a diversity chain. The students were to think about five people in the classroom. On 5 different slips of paper they were to write one way they were similar to and different from their five peers. Once done, the students formed a chain from their responses.

Unity Walk

Thanks to everyone who was able to attend Sunday’s Unity Walk, October 9th, 2011. We had great weather and it made for a very enjoyable afternoon. The walk had a new format this year which was encouraging walking teams. Prizes were given in the form of donations to a favorite charity for the teams that did the best job of promoting the Unity theme as well as the teams that had the most walkers. Not only were teams able to promote their desire for acceptance for all and show their appreciation for diversity, they also could secure a donation to their favorite charity. $3200 was donated to different charities. Thanks to all our students and teachers who volunteered as a part of the Children’s Center. It is a great activity that is very meaningful. And, Thanks to all the ROTC students who helped with the Unity Walk as well. They assisted with set-up, clean-up and parking cars. They also won the team competition for the most participants at the walk..

No Place for Hate Activity

We began our 9/11 activity Thursday, September 9th. On Monday and Tuesday, students will examine how Americans supported and honored all of those affected by the attacks. Specifically, students will learn how JHW responded to this act of hate including, Mrs. Vishio’s Piñata Project and Mr. Scheck’s work with select crafts to create a patriotic wall mural and Frank and Millie, two life-sized statues made of junk who were used to raise money for the American Red Cross. On Wednesday and Thursday, students will work in groups to create their own memorial. All of these activities will take place in homeroom during the flex period.

Resolution of Respect

On April 21, 2005, all of Junior High West’s students and staff were given the opportunity to sign the Resolution of Respect. Every year, Mr. Galtere, the school principal does a No place for Hate orientation and discusses signing the Resolution of Respect. It is important students understand what they are signing and that they are making a commitment to live by its content. The 7th grade students then have the opportunity to sign the Resolution of Respect during team building day.
