The Boyertown Area School District is committed to providing a safe school community for its students, staff and visitors. We do this through planning and practice. The school district has prepared an All Hazards Plan that details procedures for various emergencies. The building principals have further refined these procedures to building specific plans that enable us to react appropriately in various emergencies.

All Hazards Plan
In 1999, Boyertown Area School District developed an All Hazards Plan, which provides information on various emergency procedures including accidents, bomb threats, evacuation, explosion, fire, hazardous materials, natural, radiological, security situations, terrorism, casualties, and crisis intervention. The plan and practices are developed and refined using the expertise of local and regional emergency personnel, as well as, information from government sources.
The All Hazards Plan is distributed to district administrators and school principals who in turn develop site plans. School staffs are given a staff emergency procedures folder to use in the event of an emergency. The district uses a notification system to facilitate response and communication. One of the key features of the All Hazards Plan is the checklist which appears at the beginning of each section. These checklists enable the staff person in charge during an emergency to know exactly what to do, who to call and how to react. Routine corrections to the plan are made as the district experiences emergencies or conducts routine drills. Recently a threat assessment component was added utilizing the FBI/Selective Service guidelines.
Because of our nearness to the Limerick Generating Station, every two years the district must conduct a radiological drill with the help of emergency management agencies. A different school building and staff is chosen to participate in the drill every two years. This drill was most recently completed in August 2007.
In January 2003 Westat, an educational research organization in Rockville, Maryland engaged by the U.S. Department of Education to prepare a report on school safety planning, contacted us. Westat identified the top school district safety plans in each state to be included in their report. Boyertown Area School District was one of the Pennsylvania districts identified and information about our plan was included in that report. The U.S. Department of Education will analyze these plans to develop guidance and model plans for districts and schools throughout the country. The U.S. Department of Education published the Westat report under the title Practical Information on Crisis Planning: A Guide for Schools and Communities. The district is confident in the quality and detail of our plan and in the way it has worked in practice and emergency situations. We will continue to evaluate, in conjunction with emergency agencies (i.e. police, fire, PEMA), our procedures and practices, making those changes necessary to continually improve our All Hazards Plan.
