Washington Elementary School, located along Route 100 in Washington Township, is a modern educational facility geared to providing a quality education for the students of the Boyertown Area School District.
This common purpose, which is shared by staff, parents and community members, creates a feeling of cooperation, which is so vital in today’s society. Our school motto, “Home and school working together,” is one testament to our desire to make everyone involved in our school feel that they are part of a truly integrated working team.
This year, there will be approximately 655 students attending Washington Elementary School. There are four classes at every grade level, including kindergarten, which is split into two morning and two afternoon sessions. Continuing this school year, in first grade, will be our highly successful Literacy First program with teachers co-teaching during the Language arts block of the day. This program includes specially designed instruction to help children experience success within the regular first grade curriculum. In addition, a newly created autistic support classroom for the Boyertown Area School District has been developed and will be located at Washington Elementary School. This program is designed for students enrolled in kindergarten through second grade and will provide appropriate educational experiences for students with autism. The autistic support program will consist of an autistic support teacher, occupational therapist, speech therapist, and four para-professionals. Washington Elementary also provides a variety of specialized instruction and/or supplemental services for students including special education programs, Student Assistance Team and remediation services from highly trained professionals.
All students participate in art, music and physical education classes during the course of a week. They are also able to visit our library and receive formal instruction in library skills such as research in conventional ways, as through written text, as well as through computer assisted technology. A computer lab with over 30 computers is also available for our students.
Our staff, including faculty, paraprofessionals, and other adults who work within the school, are here to help our students become well-educated, responsible members of society. To achieve this goal as effectively as possible, we count on the support of parents and community members to assist us in our mission. Our Home & School Association (H.S.A.) is a very active organization which serves our school in many ways. They provide support both monetarily and physically through their volunteered efforts. Library books, playground equipment and assemblies are but a few of the many things that the H.S.A. helps our school with by providing financial support through their fund raising efforts. Many parents and community members also volunteer their time to help our students in a wide variety of ways throughout the school year. This help and support is invaluable and cannot be easily measured, but it is always appreciated.
Washington Elementary School has also created an outdoor classroom supported by our H.S.A., staff, and community. The outdoor classroom provides opportunities for active, hands-on learning where reading, writing, math, art, and especially science will blossom. Students are actively involved in planting and maintaining the classroom. Local businesses have become sponsors of the outdoor classroom. Major areas in the school courtyard include a habitat classroom, aquatic classroom, work area, composting bin, weather station, and rock garden.
Washington Elementary School is an exciting place to work, learn, and grow. By having the school and community working together toward one common goal – educational excellence for our children – we are building strong bonds that will make our students, their families, and the community-at-large, a true team. These efforts will, in turn, continue to make the Boyertown area a great place to live both now and in the future.
