• Social Studies

    • The first grade social studies curriculum focuses on giving students an opportunity to explore their relationship with the world around them through the examination of customs and traditions around the world.  We will focus this examination in the United States, China, Germany and Canada.  Your child will also have the opportunity to research a country of his/her choice.
    • Students will explore culture - how people, think, act, celebrate, make rules, and that is what makes a group of people unique.
    • We will study people, their history and their geography, to help shape a community, its economy and its culture.
    • We will also learn about customs, symbols, and celebrations to help define people and their culture.

    Science

    • Science in first grade is meant to build an understanding of science processes and content in an inquiry-based setting.
    • Students will conduct a number of investigations from three science kits:
      • Weather introduces students to the concepts of weather and how it impacts their lives.  Using a variety of tools students observe, discuss, measure and record data on cloud cover, temperature, precipitation and wind.
      • Solids and liquids provide experiences that heighten students' awareness of the physical world.  The children will have experiences with two states of matter: solids and liquids.
      • Organisms provides students hands-on experiences that helps develop an understanding of and sensitivity to living things.  The children will create a woodland and freshwater habitat to observe various live specimens.
      • We will also do some investigation into how organisms have an effect on our planet in regards to pollution and the choices we make on a daily basis.
