Social Media Club Keeps Peers Up-To-Date on School Happenings
For two days each cycle, 13 students at Middle School West come together in Mr. John Kalejta’s room for their Social Media Club’s meeting. The What’s Up West Social Media Club is in its second year and began after the junior high schools transitioned to middle schools and Middle School West lost its faculty newspaper editor to Boyertown Area Senior High.
“I considered how students get their news and pitched changing the student newspaper to a social media club to the administration,” Mr. Kalejta explains. “It has a been a remarkable success.”
With Mr. Kalejta’s assistance, the club manages the school’s Instagram account. Club meetings begin with a discussion on how the club’s recent posts have done, what is happening at the school, and what the students should focus when taking photos that day. After this discussion, the students travel the halls for approximately 20 minutes snapping photos. They then reconvene for the students to share their photos and captions with Mr. Kalejta who shares the photos via the club’s Instagram account.
Seventh grade student Emma Vontor followed the account and thought it would be fun to join the club. Her friend, Carly Hunter, enjoys taking pictures and also decided to join the club.
“My favorite part is looking for cool things to take pictures of and then seeing them posted to Instagram,” Carly says. In addition to posting photos, the club also discusses captioning and the power of words, the characteristics of a strong photo, and safety on social media.
