Follow-up to Townhall Meeting to Address Safety Concerns at Boyertown Area Senior High

We wish to thank the many members of the community, including numerous parents, Board members, and representatives of our two local police departments, who participated in last night’s Town Hall (for those unable to attend, video of the session will soon be posted to Boyertownasd.org). It was an opportunity for the District to share timely, factual and reliable information related to issues of school safety and security, and for us to hear directly about your concerns and suggestions. As was stated at the meeting, we are all committed to not only providing the highest quality education to your children, but also doing so in the safest possible learning environment. The feedback so far is that such meetings are very productive and should be considered within the school calendar. Your input in this regard is greatly appreciated.

With the considerable assistance of Boyertown and Colebrookdale police departments, it was determined that the alleged threat recently associated with a Boyertown Area School District student was not credible. In other words, investigators found no evidence to support the assertion that there was planned violence – possibly involving a weapon – and that more than one student might be involved. Unfortunately, this unverified rumor took on a life of its own over social media. As a result of our due diligence, the student in question – who we will not name - along with one other Boyertown Area School District student, have voluntarily agreed not to return to school for the remainder of the school year. We continue, however, to interact with them and with their families with the assistance of a counseling professional. 0They pose no threat based on the assessment of investigators. And their privacy should be respected.

Please make no mistake that we have been and will continue to be vigilant when it comes to addressing any issue of safety and security within our schools.  The students who reported to administrators the perceived threat did the right thing and are to be commended. While we urge prompt reporting of any potentially disturbing, possibly violent situation, we also recognize the need to conduct – with the assistance of law enforcement if necessary - comprehensive fact finding before passing reaching conclusions about any possible threat. We will do our best to communicate only accurate information to you and our community, guided by law enforcement. To do otherwise, would be irresponsible and possibly harmful.

Thank you again for sharing your thoughts and caring for your students and about our community.
